Kansas legislature unanimously approves DUI bill
Kansas House and Senate unanimously approved a measure that requires all convicted drunken drivers to use ignition interlock devices, strengthens DUI penalties, and creates a system to track repeat offenders. The bill requires interlocks for first time offenders and all offenders and also raises the minimum fine for a DUI misdemeanor from $500 to $750. Judges, prosecutors and law enforcement will have greater access to driving records through a central repository funded by the Kansas DOT which will help track repeat offenders. Lawmakers said the bill will save lives and is a step in the right direction by the state.
