New Nebraska DUI laws to take effect in 2012
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman approved new drunk driving legislation that will go into effect on January 1, 2012. LB 667 requires drivers convicted of first and second DUI offenses to install ignition interlocks in their vehicles. The law creates a separate criminal offense for driving drunk with a child in the vehicle and also distinguishes the crime of motor vehicle homicide of an unborn child from the DUI offense. LB 675 requires a two-year minimum jail sentence for those convicted of a fifth DUI offense. Additionally, most DUI fines are doubled and penalties are increased for drivers involved in hit-and-run collisions. The new DUI measures focus on a common-sense approach to keep Nebraska’s roads safer.
